I’ve been passing the time by scrolling through famed aviation photographer !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and came across this photo, which I thought you might find interesting. It’s a dazzle painted F-14A that Larkins photographed on the deck of USS Enterprise as it steamed out of San Francisco harbor in 1976. The top photo is a detail of the second photo, showing a gaggle of F-14As with liveries from different squadrons. I just noticed a second dazzle F-14 at the back of the ship.

From the comments, I learned that this is the work of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , an artist responsible for many camouflage patterns, and whose work is worthy of an entire post. More info on the F-14 camouflage !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

They even had a bear in the air.

Classic song, even had a 45 of it. But the B side, Wolf Creek Pass, might be better.

Huh, neat!
Apparently there were seven F-14s done in various “Heater-Ferris” schemes in the late 70's and early 80's:
“Colors and Markings of US Navy F-14s Part VII” covers the unique “Heater-Ferris” schemed Tomcats of the late 70’s and early ‘80s. This set was designed using the excellent references provided in Detail and Scale’s new F-14 books; “Colors and Markings of U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcats Parts 1 & 2”. Enough stencils are provided to build 4 complete models out of the seven options provided. (1) 8”x10” decal page is included in this set. Here’s a look at the Tomcats covered:
VF-1, F-14A 158979, USS Enterprise, 1977, “NK-100”
VF-2, F-14A 158985, USS Enterprise, 1977, “NK-200”
VF-124, F-14A 159825, NAS Miramar, 1978, “NJ-423”
VX-4, F-14A 159828, NAS Point Mugu, 1978, “XF-42”
PMTC, F-14A 159828, NAS Point Mugu, 1978, “PMTC-201”
VF-101, F-14A 161135, NAS Oceana, 1982, “AD-102”
VF-1, F-14A 158979, USS Kittyhawk, 1983, “NE-111”
The one off the Kitty Hawk is rather interesting, even for these schemes:
Gonna have to grab an F-14 and a set of those decals off eBay.

There are a number of photos of the dazzle F-14 on the web. I might have to do a piece on this.

I don't remember this being on the B side of the 45 version I bought. Pretty cool.

It may not have been. I was just guessing, honestly. We may have had a 45 of each one .

Those are big planes.

They are, but maybe not as big as the F-98.

I actually heard this one first. Hadn’t ever heard ‘Convoy’ until 6-7 years ago. Heard ‘Wolf Creek Pass’ on XM back when it was still a thing before merging with Sirius.
I’m 45, so not a kid...just never had occasion to listen to CW McCall until then.

I’ve got 8 years on you, so I was a bit older during the CB radio craze of the early 70s. Convoy was on AM radio constantly.

Oh, I knew about the CB craze. My dad put one in our ‘78 Cutlass along with a big goofy whip antenna.
